I want to share something real with you today - something I’ve lived through and come out the other side of. For over 30 years, I wrestled with anxiety, PTSD, and addiction. I used alcohol to numb the constant tension inside me. I was that dad snapping at his kids, lying awake at night, and feeling like I was failing my family. But here’s the truth: it doesn’t have to be that way. You can reset and regulate your nervous system, and I’m here to show you how.
This isn’t about quick fixes or empty promises. It’s about practical, science-backed tools that work. Tools I’ve tested on myself and thousands of men just like you. Today, I’m going to walk you through what nervous system regulation really means, why it’s crucial for men, and how you can start resetting your nervous system right now.
*By the way, not only am I recovering from trauma, PTSD, and addiction, I study and teach the Central Nervous System (CNS) and Peripheral Nervous System (PNS) in my Medical Detectives Classes, where dissect a sheep's brain, study neuroconnections, and diseases of the brain & nervous system.

Understanding Nervous System Regulation and Why It Matters
The nervous system is your body’s command center. It controls how you react to stress, how you sleep, how you connect with your family, and how you feel inside. When it’s out of balance, everything feels harder. You’re on edge, irritable, and exhausted. You might reach for a beer or two just to take the edge off, but that only makes things worse in the long run.
Nervous system regulation means bringing your body and mind back into balance. It’s about calming the fight-or-flight response that keeps you stuck in survival mode. When you regulate your nervous system, you gain control over your reactions. You stop snapping at your kids. You sleep better. You show up fully present for your family.
I know this because I’ve been there. I was skeptical too. I thought, “I’ve tried everything—therapy, meditation, willpower. Nothing sticks.” But what changed everything for me was learning how to reset my nervous system through simple, practical methods that don’t take hours or require expensive therapy sessions.
Nervous System Regulation: The Key to Breaking the Cycle
If you’re like me, you’ve probably tried to “just relax” or “push through” the stress. But that’s like trying to fix a car engine while it’s still running at full speed. You need to hit the brakes first. That’s what nervous system regulation does.
Here’s what nervous system regulation looks like in practice:
Recognizing your triggers: Knowing what sets off your stress response.
Using breathwork: Simple breathing techniques to calm your nervous system.
Engaging your body: Movement or gentle guitar playing to shift your state.
Creating safe spaces: Moments where your body feels secure and grounded.
When you practice these consistently, you start rewiring your nervous system. You build resilience. You stop reacting and start responding.
This is especially important for men who feel stuck in patterns of drinking, emotional shutdown, or constant worry. It’s not about willpower. It’s about biology. Your nervous system needs to be reset and regulated before you can change your behavior.
How to Immediately Reset the Nervous System?
Sometimes, you don’t have hours or even minutes. You need a tool that works right now. Here’s a simple method I use daily, and it’s helped thousands of men regain control:
Pause and breathe: Stop what you’re doing. Take a deep breath in for 4 seconds.
Hold your breath: Hold it for 7 seconds. This might feel uncomfortable at first, but that’s okay.
Exhale slowly: Breathe out for 8 seconds, making the exhale longer than the inhale.
Repeat: Do this cycle 3-5 times.
This breath pattern activates your parasympathetic nervous system-the part that calms you down. It’s quick, discreet, and you can do it anywhere: at work, in the car, or even when your kids are pushing your buttons.
Another powerful tool is gentle guitar playing. Yes, guitar. The vibrations and focus required help regulate your nervous system in a way that’s both grounding and creative. It’s not about being a musician; it’s about using the guitar as a reset tool.
Why Men Struggle with Nervous System Regulation and What to Do About It
Men often face unique challenges when it comes to nervous system regulation. Society teaches us to be tough, to “man up,” and to handle stress on our own. This creates a dangerous cycle of bottling up emotions and relying on unhealthy coping mechanisms like alcohol.
I get it. I was that tough guy. I currently coach wresting. I competed in The Toughman Contest (Milwaukee Rumble), I practiced martial arts for years, and I drank to silence the noise in my head. But that only made my nervous system more reactive. The more I drank, the worse my anxiety and PTSD became.
Here’s what I learned:
You’re not weak for needing help. Regulating your nervous system is a skill, not a sign of failure.
Willpower alone won’t fix this. You need tools that work with your body, not against it.
Consistency is key. Small daily practices add up to big changes.
You can reclaim your life. You can be the dad and husband you want to be.
If you’re ready to break free from the cycle, start with small steps. Try the breathwork I shared. Pick up a guitar or any instrument that feels right. Create moments of calm in your day. These are the building blocks of nervous system reset for men.
Taking the First Step Toward Lasting Change
I want to leave you with this: change is possible. You don’t have to live in constant stress or rely on alcohol to get through the day. You can learn to reset and regulate your nervous system, and it starts with simple, practical actions.
