Why I Teach This

Guitar was the one place that was mine. Growing up, home wasn't always safe, and when things got loud or hard, I'd pick up a guitar and disappear into it for a while. Nobody could touch that.

I carried that habit into adulthood, but I didn't use it on purpose. I used alcohol instead — to numb, to cope, to disappear in a different way.

Then one New Year's Eve, my whole family was together — my kids, my wife, everyone I loved, all in one house. I was drinking heavily. Someone I loved went down that night, and for a few minutes, everyone in that house thought he was gone. I don't remember any of it. My wife told me what happened the next morning.

That was the night I told her: never again.

In the mornings after, when the shame was still there and my hands wouldn't quite settle, I picked up a guitar again — not to perform, not to write a song, just to breathe and play for two minutes until I could feel steady.

It became a daily practice. Not a plan, not a strategy — just the one thing that helped when nothing else did. I don't carry what I used to carry the same way anymore. I regulate it now, every single day, two minutes at a time.

This isn't weakness. It's the strongest I've ever been, and it takes the least effort I've ever put into anything.

Why Guitar, Specifically

Music isn't a metaphor for me — it's been my actual life. I've spent years as a singer-songwriter, performing everywhere from Milwaukee's Summerfest on the Harley-Davidson Stage to Potawatomi Casino, with appearances on 88Nine Radio Milwaukee along the way.

I wrote a book about it — Hollow — a collection of the stories behind the songs: the inspirations, the emotions, what was actually happening in my life when I wrote each one. It's the same honesty I bring here.

So when I hand you a guitar and tell you two minutes will change how your night goes, it's not a wellness gimmick borrowed from somewhere else. It's the one tool that's carried me through the hardest parts of my own life, simplified down to something you can use tonight.

Who This Is For

If you've ever snapped at your kids and spent the next hour hating yourself for it — this is for you. If you're stuck performing fine at work and everywhere else, then coming home and having nothing left for the people who matter most — this is for you.

You're not broken. Your nervous system just needs somewhere to go besides numbing out. This is that somewhere.
